What is the difference between Oahu, Waikiki, & Honolulu?

Oahu is the third-largest Hawaiian island, home to numerous beaches, mountains, valleys, and landmarks. Honolulu is the capital of Hawaii and is located on the southeastern coast of Oahu. Waikiki is a well-known district within Honolulu city limits that runs along Oahu's south shore. It's famous for its stunning beaches, unique attractions, and vibrant nightlife scene. In short, Oahu is an island in Hawaii that includes both Waikiki & Honolulu as part of it.

Day 1- Exploring Honolulu

Are you ready to embark on a journey that will reshape how you experience travel? Then Honolulu, the vibrant capital of Hawaii, is your ideal destination! Packed with iconic landmarks and beautiful beaches alike, this captivating city has something for everyone.

What better place than Honolulu to start your unforgettable adventure? On day one, I suggest strolling through downtown and taking pictures at some of its most popular attractions. Take my guide as an invitation: let's explore what this fantastic city can offer together!

If you are looking for a great hike on Oahu, you may be torn between Diamond Head Crater and Koko Crater Railway. Both offer beautiful, unique views of the island and will give you an unforgettable experience. Still, depending on your physical condition, one may be better suited for you than the other.

Koko Crater is steep and requires more leg work/cardio climbing up the abandoned railway. If you're up for the challenge, then head on over before sunrise. For those wanting something easier, choose Diamond Head instead, but remember to purchase a ticket online beforehand.

☻ Time: Approx 1 hour 30 minutes- 2 hours

Afternoon: Waikiki Stroll

Waikiki Beach with stacks of surfboards

You're likely staying around Waikiki, so walk around this beautiful area to enjoy the Waikiki beach. Stroll around this iconic beach, dip in the ocean, or just laze around. Ensure you also stop by some of the town's trendiest bars and restaurants for lunch. Make sure to try out one of their delicious shaved ice desserts to cool down!

Try taking a surf lesson on Waikiki beach! It's a great way to experience the ocean and have lots of fun. You can learn how to catch waves and show off your new skills. Plus, who doesn't love being in the sun and having cool sea breezes?

☻ Time: Approx: 3 hours (1 hour 30 mins for surf lessons)

Evening: Drive up to Punchbowl Scenic Lookout

Punchbowl Scenic Lookout during Sunset
Punchbowl Scenic Lookout

The Punchbowl Scenic Lookout is one of the most breathtaking spots in Honolulu. Located inside the National Memorial Cemetery, the lookout offers stunning views of Honolulu and its surrounding area. From this spot, visitors can take in some of Hawaii's most iconic landmarks, including Diamond Head Crater and Waikiki Beach.

Whether you're an avid photographer or just looking for a romantic spot to watch the sunset, the Punchbowl Scenic Lookout is sure to be one of your most memorable experiences on Oahu. The lookout also provides a peaceful and tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of city life to end the night.

☻ Time: Approx: 1 hour

Cuckoo Coconuts Tiki Bar in Waikiki is the perfect spot if you're looking for a memorable night out with an old-school touch. Step back in time and experience tropical cocktails, Hawaiian food, and music. The vibrant atmosphere and laid-back vibes will make your night one to remember. And remember to sample the signature Real Pina Colada served in an actual pineapple, sure to make you feel like you're in paradise!

☻ Time: Approx: 3 hours

I wasn't going to include restaurants in this Guide, but right behind Reef Pirates Diving, there is this delicious brunch spot, Moena Cafe!

☞ Suggestions: It's more of a relaxing day, especially after scuba diving. If it is your first-time scuba diving, then you'll feel extra tired after. It's okay to rest up and do more tomorrow!

After an exhilarating morning of scuba diving, return home to shower and then take some time to wind down at the Mu-Ryang-Sa Korean Buddhist Temple. Located in Palolo Valley, up in the quiet hills, this temple offers visitors a peaceful and tranquil environment where they can reflect and practice mindfulness.

The Mu-Ryang-Sa Korean Buddhist Temple is a beautiful place to explore, with its colorful garden and breathtaking mountain views. Take the time to learn about the temple's history and culture, and check out their meditation services for extra peace of mind.

☻ Time: Approx: 1 hour

Before Sunset: Go to Waimanalo Beach

As the sun slowly dips below the horizon, it paints the sky in vibrant oranges and pinks, giving you peace and serenity. Afterward, take a stroll along the shoreline and admire the peacefulness of this beautiful beach. Make sure to bring a camera and capture fantastic photos of your evening at Waimanalo Beach!

Day 3- Drive up to North Shore Itinerary

Are you looking for a fun-filled day on the beautiful island of Oahu? Then let's take a drive up to North Shore! This stunning part of the island is home to some of Hawaii's most picturesque beaches, breathtaking views, and plenty of exciting activities. With only one day in this fantastic place, there is no time to waste – so get ready for an unforgettable experience as we explore all North Shore has to offer!

You can either drive up to North Shore on Highway H2 or choose a slightly different scenic route going through East Oahu. I went up and down H2, which was boring, so I'd take the longer route if I were you. (Check the map for more directions)

Today will be a full day with a lot of driving, so prepare for it! 🚗

Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden breathing view
Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden

Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden is a stunning place to explore in East Oahu. This 400-acre free park is full of lush tropical plants, native trees, and flowers, providing a picturesque backdrop for any outdoor adventure. The garden's centerpiece is its man-made freshwater lake that offers visitors plenty of opportunities to explore by canoe.

There are plenty of pathways and trails to choose from, so you can make your visit as leisurely or adventurous as you like! Whether you're looking for a peaceful nature retreat or an outdoor adventure – Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden is the perfect place to find it! AND IT IS FREE!

☻ Time: Approx: 1 - 2 hours

The Byodo-In Buddhist Temple
The Byodo-In Buddhist Temple

After a quiet and peaceful morning at Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden, why not take a short drive (just 15 minutes away) to the Byodo-In Temple? This historic Japanese Buddhist temple replica is an absolutely amazing place to explore. With its zen gardens and iconic architecture, it truly offers visitors an unforgettable experience.

Admission is $5 per person, paid by card only.

And before you know it, you'll be at North Shore– let's make the most of it!

☻ Time: Approx: 1 hour

Optional: For the Movie Sites Lovers, Kualoa Ranch

For any movie lover, a trip to North Shore would only be complete with a visit to the iconic Kualoa Ranch. Located on the windward side of Oahu, this historic ranch has been home to some of the most famous films and TV shows in history, including Jurassic Park, Jumanji, Godzilla, Lost, 50 First Dates, and more! As you explore the ranch, you can take an ATV tour to get up close and personal with the movie sets or take a Jungle Expedition that will give you insight into the ranch's fascinating history. Or, if you prefer, try one of their Jurassic Valley Horseback walking tours, which will make you feel like a true movie star!

I found these tours out of my budget range and was never a crazy fan of these movies & TV shows, so I opted out. I just wanted to put this out as an option for travelers that are bougie than my broke-bougie a**.

☻ Time: Approx: MIM 2 hours

Noon: Laniakea Beach for Green Sea Turtle

Standing at Laniakea Beach waiting for sea turtles
I think I see a sea turtle...

At Laniakea Beach, travelers can relax and admire the beauty of nature while witnessing the majestic creatures that call this beach home. The most iconic sight is the majestic green sea turtle sunbathing on the shoreline. Here, you can take a break from their adventurous journey and soak in the tranquil atmosphere of this beach.

I had no lucks when I went to see them, but you can find many pictures on their google review. I hope you will have more luck than me! Maybe they got scared since the kids were screaming every second...

☻ Time: Approx: 30 minutes

Rainbow Water Sports: Paddle Boarding or Shark...

Paddle Boarding at Haleiwa
Paddle Boarding

Now that you've explored the Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden, Byodo-In Temple, and Kualoa Ranch, it's time to relax. And what better way to do that than with some paddle boarding?

Rainbow Water Sports offers a variety of packages for stand-up paddle boarders of all abilities, from beginners to advanced.

Or maybe if you're not tired yet and are feeling adventurous, then I recommend snorkeling with sharks. Of course, with professionals... DON'T WORRY

☻ Time: Approx: 2 hours

Optional: Dole Plantation- Pineapple Whip

Pineapple Whip at Dole Plantation
Pineapple Whip

Dole Plantation may be best known for its delicious pineapple whip soft serve, but there is more than meets the eye regarding this tourist trap. Located on the North Shore of Oahu, Dole Plantation originally started as a commercial pineapple plantation in the early 1900s and was even home to the world's largest maze. While the train ride and 3-acre garden maze are fun for families, there is not much more to do at this plantation. So if you're looking for a unique experience during your trip, I suggest exploring some other attractions on Oahu instead! But if you just can't resist that delicious pineapple whip, then by all means, go for it!

☻ Time: Approx: 1 hour

Day 4- History, Arts & Culture Activities

After three days of adventure, it's time to relax and explore the culture and art of Oahu. One part of the Pearl Harbor Museum

For history lovers looking to take a journey through time, the Pearl Harbor National Memorial is a must-see destination. Located in Oahu, Hawaii, this historic site commemorates the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor that marked the beginning of the United States' involvement in World War II. Visitors to the memorial can pay their respects to those who lost their lives in the attack by visiting the USS Arizona Memorial, a floating memorial built atop a sunken battleship. The on-site museum and galleries are also packed with educational information about the history of Pearl Harbor and its significance during World War II. Remember to make a reservation for the USS Arizona Memorial if you plan on visiting this.

☻ Time: Approx: 2 hours

Culture: Bishop Museum

Bishop Museum is a must-see destination for anyone who enjoys learning about the culture and immersing themselves in history. Located in Honolulu, Hawaii, the museum is full of exhibits and artifacts showcasing Hawaii's culture and the Pacific Islands. The museum has been around for over 125 years and provides a unique insight into how the islands have developed over the last century. From hands-on experiences to interactive exhibits, Bishop Museum provides an educational and enjoyable opportunity for adults and children.

☻ Time: Approx: 1 -2 hours

Art: Honolulu Museum of Art (HoMA)

Visiting the Honolulu Museum of Art is a must-do for any traveler to Oahu, Hawaii. Established in 1927, HoMA is the largest and oldest art museum in Hawaii, offering an impressive collection of over 50,000 works worldwide. The museum's galleries house masterpieces from artists spanning centuries, continents, and movements.

To visit the Shangri-La requires a bit of planning before the visit. You must have a reservation, and tour dates come out every two months. If you are lucky enough to book a Shangri-La tour, make sure to go to HoMA for the designated shuttle bus to take you to the museum! Each tour is around 75 minutes self-guided, and after the tour, they will take you back to HoMa. Remember to reserve enough time during the day for this visit!

☻ Time: Approx: 3 -4 hours
