Nikko, Japan, is a stunning destination to visit during autumn for its breathtaking autumn foliage. Located in the Tochigi Prefecture of Japan, Nikko boasts vibrant autumn leaves turn into beautiful flame-red and orange hues that make the perfect backdrop for outdoor activities such as hiking and hot springs.


I had a fun and memorable experience with my housemates at Nikko, Japan, during autumn when we went on an amazing hike through the vibrant red and orange foliage while also relaxing at in Okunikko Yumoto Onsen at night. The stunning landscapes of Nikko are perfect for anyone looking to take a break from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Ryuzu Falls, located in Nikko, Japan, is one of the most beautiful autumn sights. This magnificent two cascade drops over 210 meters and is surrounded by vibrant autumn foliage. Maple and linden trees turn into autumn colors of orange, red, and yellow as they line the trails and paths leading up to the falls.

Chuzenji Lake is a stunning autumn destination located in Nikko, Japan. It is situated at the base of Mt. Nantai, Nikko's sacred volcano, and features beautiful lakeside scenery and vibrant autumn foliage. The lake spans over 25 kilometers in circumference and is a great spot for autumn hiking. Start your trek from Futarasan-jinja Shrine and walk towards Chuzenji Onsen, a hot spring town at the lake's eastern end. Okukinu Onsen, located in Nikko, Japan, is one of the area's hardest hot spring resorts to visit. Accessible only by a 90-minute walk along a mountain road (non-ryokan hikers), cars are forbidden due to the delicate environment surrounding the springs. This gorgeous resort offers private hot spring baths surrounded by lush forests and autumn leaves. The hot springs can be accessed by taking the Ryokan shuttle bus or hiking trail and are the perfect spot for an unforgettable autumn experience.

The Nikko Toshogu Shrine Autumn Grand Festival is a spectacular event held annually in Nikko, Japan, on October 16th and 17th. The festival goes back centuries and represents an essential part of the culture and history of the region. During the festival, thousands of parade participants and spectators alike line the streets near the shrine to witness a grand procession of people dressed in extravagant costumes and performing the re-enactment of the relocation of the divine spirit of the great shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa from Mt. Kuno in Shozuoka to Nikko. The festival is a truly unique experience, and it is worth seeing.
